Frequently Asked Questions about Tours in Tromsø

FAQs

Booking & Cancellation

How do I book a tour? +

Choose the tour on its page and pick a date. You book with our partner GetYourGuide or Headout and pay there; the confirmation arrives by email.

Can I cancel my booking? +

It depends on the tour. The whale watching catamaran booked through Headout can be cancelled free of charge up to 48 hours before; the Fjellheisen ticket on Headout cannot be cancelled. For each tour you see the conditions in the booking window before you pay.

Who do I contact about my booking? +

The partner you booked with: GetYourGuide or Headout. Their support teams help with changes, cancellation and your voucher. The links are on our contact page.

What about the Tromsø Pass? +

The Tromsø Pass is sold only at the Tourist Information at Storgata 83 on Prostneset and is non-refundable. We do not sell it here.

Seasons & Weather

When is northern lights season? +

From late August to early April. You need darkness and a clear sky, and the aurora can never be guaranteed. The tours are on the northern lights tours page.

When is the whale season? +

Usually from the beginning of November to the end of January, when orcas and humpback whales follow the herring into the fjords north of Tromsø. Sightings cannot be guaranteed. More on the whale watching page.

What are the polar night and the midnight sun? +

During the polar night, from about 27 November to 15 January, the sun stays below the horizon. During the midnight sun, from about 20 May to 22 July, it does not set at all.

What should I wear on a tour? +

Warm layers, a hat, gloves and warm boots. You spend a lot of time outside, often standing still. Some tours provide winter suits; the tour description in the booking window says what is included.

Tours & Activities

Which tours can I combine in one day? +

Most tours with animals run by day, the northern lights tours in the evening. A husky tour or a visit to Polaria fits well before an evening tour. A whale watching tour takes most of the day on its own.

Do I need experience for dog sledding? +

No. On a self-drive tour the guides show you how to steer and brake before you set off.

Is the Fjellheisen cable car open during the construction works? +

Yes. The cable car keeps running during the Fjellheisen 2.0 works, but the old viewing platform is closed and there is no access for wheelchairs or walkers for the time being. More on the Fjellheisen page.

Do I need a ticket for the Arctic Cathedral? +

Tickets are sold at the door, and children under 12 go in free. Opening hours change from week to week. Buses 20, 24, 26 and 28 take you across the bridge to Tromsdalen.

Getting Around

How do I get around Tromsø? +

The city buses are run by Svipper. Bus 26 goes from Torgsenteret to the Fjellheisen cable car; buses 33, 34, 40 and 42 stop near Polaria. Many tours include a transfer from the city centre.

How do I get from the airport to the city? +

Buses 24, 26, 40 and 42 connect the airport with the city. Svipper tickets are not valid on the Airport Express bus.
