Most of what draws visitors to Tromsø in winter depends on the season and the dark hours. The northern lights season runs from late August to early April, the whales come into the fjords from November to January, and the polar night shapes the days in between. We say on each page when a tour runs, what it cannot promise, such as a sighting of the aurora or the whales, and how the tours differ, from a minibus chase to a dinner cruise and from a self-drive husky sled to a reindeer camp. Alongside the tours sit tickets for the Fjellheisen cable car and for Polaria, the Arctic experience centre in the city.
